Earlier this year, the glammed members of the jazz-vocal group säje — made up of Sara Gazarek, Amanda Taylor, Johnaye Kendrick, and Erin Bentlage — walked in a line with their Technicolor-suited collaborator Jacob Collier to the front of Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena to accept a Grammy.
The win was säje’s first — in the Best Arrangement, Instrument, and Vocals category — and it recognized its work on “In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning,” off the group’s self-titled debut album. The quartet had been nominated in the same category before in 2020 for “Desert Song” — the first single it ever released — but COVID protocols had, at the time, muted fanfare, with the foursome getting dressed up for its own personal celebration. Reflecting on the recent win over Zoom in mid-March, Kendrick said that going to the Grammys in person made things feel more real.
