What the hell is The Forge?
That was the question trade magazine Variety rather impolitely asked when it caught wind that actress Kristen Stewart’s long-in-the-making feature-directing debut, The Chronology of Water, had been acquired for domestic distribution by the Vashon Island-based company after its 2025 Cannes Film Festival premiere.
Founded in 2019 by erstwhile producer Mark Sayre, The Forge has been responsible for the U.S. distribution of several acclaimed, albeit under-the-radar, movies since its inception. (Actress turned filmmaker Noémie Merlant’s chaotic dark comedy The Balconettes and Josephine Stewart-Te Wihu’s coming-of-age drama We Were Dangerous stand among its buzziest projects so far.)
