Outgoing Grand Cinema Leader Philip Cowan: ‘I’m Ready to Step Away’

For South Sound: Retiring later this year after nearly 20 years in the role, the executive director of the Tacoma organization discusses the accomplishments he’s most proud of, favorite memories, and why he wouldn’t necessarily call himself a film buff.

Grand Cinema Executive Director Philip Cowan recently returned from the Sundance Film Festival, where he saw 44 movies for professional purposes in a little more than a week. He doesn’t really consider himself a movie person, though.

“I’ve always been someone who looked for the smaller arthouse films,” Cowan conceded in an interview earlier this month. “I’ve done that all my life, but I was never terribly involved: I wasn’t doing any film festivals, I didn’t know directors — I didn’t get into the minutiae of film. Some people are just major film buffs, and that’s never been me and still not me. Most of the film stuff that I’ve done I’ve learned as I’ve gone along here at The Grand.”
